Social Media Day – A Special Day For Social Media Marketing Professionals
Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, officially named June 30 as Social Media Day, as proclaimed by the city’s mayor Dean Forntin. The movement was initiated by a member of Idea Wave, who approached Councillor Chris Coleman and had the day proclaimed. The story was picked up by Mashable, the famous social media online magazine, who noted that Victoria was the first city in the world to officially proclaim this type of event.
In honor of the special day, a gathering was held at a classy restaurant and lounge inside the iconic Fairmont Empress Hotel. Approximately 80 people accumulated at the Bengal Room to mingle and discuss social media. A large number of these attendees were active in the local “Twitter” community, and this event gave the opportunity for those who often interact solely on Twitter to meet face to face.
